Cloning of Mouse - Frozen for 16 years

Mice have been successfully cloned from another mouse which died 16 years ago, whose intact body was frozen at minus 20 degrees centigrade (1st November 2008). The Japanese research raises questions about whether extinct animals could be cloned from bodies preserved in permafrost, or indeed if a dead person could be "recovered", cloned as a time-warp identical baby twin made from tissue frozen at or before death. Cloning presents huge practical and ethical issues - with major risks to the health of cloned animals (or humans).

A South Korean medical research team said on 16 December 1998 that they had succeeded in cultivating a human embryo using human cells, but claimed they had already been beaten by the British. Researchers at the infertility clinic of Kyunghee University Hospital in Seoul said they had grown a early human embryo in using an unfertilised egg and a cell donated by a woman in her 30s.  This follows an announcement four weeks earlier that another scientist had cloned himself using a cows egg in experiments kept secret for three years.

Should genetic engineering or human cloning be used to create designer babies?

Every parent wants a perfect child - but what happens when a parent wants a designer child - a child built to order, a pedigree child, a super-breed, super-human or just a baby with higher intelligence?  Sex selection is just the start of the process, a form of designer life: parents deciding that only a certain type of perfectly normal child will be allowed to be born.

Latest research is turning all these dreams into reality, using technology developed originally for use in animals.

While most people would be horrified at the thought of murdering a newborn baby just because it is the wrong gender, this has been happening in India and China, possibly elsewhere. Reports suggest that the ratio of men to women in China has been profoundly altered as a result of the state single child policy.  Sex Selection has become a national issue.

Human cloning: human clones can be made but not born. That's the naïve verdict of President Clinton, and also of advisors to the British government this week (9/12/98). Make clones for medical research, to grow human tissues from embryonic stem cells, but don't implant them into the womb. (Archive Feature by Dr Patrick Dixon, Los Angeles Times December 1998)

Selling human eggs on-line is the latest fashion.  Infertile couples are buying human eggs on-line.  Supermodels could have whole new career selling their eggs.  After all, sperm banks have been around for years - so why not donate eggs which might give a child a genetic advantage?  Why I am against human cloning.
